About Dharasuram Airavatesvara Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage Site (Great Living Chola Temples) built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century. Said to have been worshipped by Airavata (Indra's white elephant) and Yama (god of death) who bathed here to cure a curse. The entire mandapam is built in the shape of a chariot with stone wheels. Exceptional for its musical steps — each stone step produces a different musical note.
