About Ayyappa Temples

Lord Ayyappa (Harihara putra — son of Shiva and Vishnu) is the presiding deity of Sabarimala and is unique in requiring a 41-day vratham (vow of celibacy and discipline) before pilgrimage. The darshan at Sabarimala, especially during Makara Vilakku, is one of the most intense and moving spiritual experiences available to a devotee.

What is the best time to visit Sabarimala? ▾
Sabarimala is open during Mandala season (November–December), Makara Vilakku (January), and for a few days every Malayalam month. Makara Vilakku (mid-January) is the most auspicious and also the most crowded.
What preparation is needed for Sabarimala yatra? ▾
A 41-day or 48-day vratham is traditionally observed — wearing black clothes, avoiding meat, alcohol, and maintaining celibacy. The trip itself typically takes 3–4 days including trekking to the shrine.
Are there other important Ayyappa temples besides Sabarimala? ▾
Yes — Achankovil, Kulathupuzha, Aryankavu, and Thrikkovilvattom in Kerala, and Pazhani Murugan (also hosts Ayyappa) in Tamil Nadu. Many devotees combine these with the Sabarimala trip.
