About Aluva Manappuram Shiva Temple
The Aluva Sivarathri Mahotsavam is one of the largest Shivaratri celebrations in India, held on the sandy banks of the Periyar river. The Shivalinga installed on a sand embankment (Manappuram = sand bank) is worshipped once a year — the temple has no permanent structure. The ritual creates a temporary city on the riverbank. Lakhs of devotees attend.
