Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 📍 Chennai → Kanchipuram → Tiruvannamalai 🚗 Chennai to Kanchipuram: 1.5 hrs. Kanchipuram to Tiruvannamalai: 2.5 hrs.

🌅 Morning

Depart Chennai by 6:00 AM. Drive to Kanchipuram (75 km, 1.5 hours). Arrive by 7:30 AM. Darshan at Ekambareswarar temple (Shiva — Earth element Panchabhootha Stala). Then visit Kamakshi Amman temple (1 km) — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Allow 2.5 hours total for Kanchipuram.

☀️ Afternoon

Visit Varadaraja Perumal Temple (Vishnu Divya Desam, 3 km from Kamakshi). Lunch at Kanchipuram. Depart for Tiruvannamalai (100 km, 2.5 hours). Arrive by 4:00–4:30 PM. Check in at hotel.

🌙 Evening

Evening darshan at Arunachaleswarar temple. The ancient Shiva temple at dusk — oil lamps and bells in the 1000-pillar mandapam. If full moon day, Girivalam circumambulation available.

🙏 Kanchipuram is called "Temple City" — home to over 100 temples. Visiting three major temples here (Shiva, Devi, Vishnu) gives a complete multi-deity blessing in a single morning.

⚠️ Kanchipuram temple complex is large — comfortable footwear essential. Start Ekambareswarar early before the morning crowd builds.

Day 2 📍 Tiruvannamalai → Chidambaram → Kumbakonam 🚗 Tiruvannamalai to Chidambaram: 3 hrs. Chidambaram to Kumbakonam: 1.5 hrs.

🌅 Morning

Early morning darshan at Arunachaleswarar by 6:00 AM — the Agni (Fire) Lingam, Panchabhootha Stala. The sacred hill Arunachala at sunrise is a deeply moving sight. Optional: short Girivalam of just the inner path (2.5 km) for a peaceful circumambulation without the full 14 km route.

☀️ Afternoon

Depart by 10:00 AM. Drive to Chidambaram (160 km, 3 hours). Darshan of Nataraja (Akasha Lingam — Space element). The dancing Shiva in his cosmic form. Lunch at Chidambaram.

🌙 Evening

Drive to Kumbakonam (60 km, 1.5 hours). Check in. Visit Mahamaham tank (sacred tank where the waters of all holy rivers are said to merge, once in 12 years). Dinner at Kumbakonam.

🏨 Stay: Kumbakonam 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg in all three towns. Kumbakonam is known for its filter coffee and traditional meals.

🙏 Tiruvannamalai and Chidambaram represent the inner spiritual journey — Fire (transformation) and Space (infinite consciousness). This day is considered the deepest spiritual day of the Tamil Nadu circuit.

⚠️ Chidambaram inner sanctum has strict protocols. Evening puja timing at Chidambaram is worth waiting for.

Day 3 📍 Kumbakonam → Thanjavur → Trichy 🚗 Kumbakonam to Thanjavur: 1 hr. Thanjavur to Trichy: 1 hr.

🌅 Morning

Morning in Kumbakonam — visit Sarangapani Temple and Kumbeswarar Temple (two important temples in the city, walkable from most hotels). Optional: Vaitheeswaran Koil (30 km) for health-related blessings. Depart by 10:30 AM.

☀️ Afternoon

Drive to Thanjavur (40 km, 1 hour). Darshan at Brihadeeswarar Temple — the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rajagopuram and Nandi statue are magnificent. Lunch at Thanjavur. Drive to Trichy (55 km, 1 hour). Visit Jambukeswarar temple at Thiruvanaikaval (Water Lingam — Panchabhootha). Visit Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam — one of the world's largest temple complexes.

Check in at Trichy. Rest. Dinner.

🙏 Thanjavur and Trichy are the cultural heart of Tamil Nadu. Brihadeeswarar is a reminder of the great Chola kings who built temples as acts of devotion. Srirangam is one of the most sacred Vishnu temples in the world.

⚠️ Srirangam temple complex is very large — allow 2 hours minimum. Comfortable footwear is essential for the large campus.

Day 4 📍 Trichy → Madurai 🚗 Trichy to Madurai: 2.5 hrs.

🌅 Morning

Depart Trichy by 7:00 AM. Drive to Madurai (150 km, 2.5 hours). Arrive by 9:30 AM. Darshan at Meenakshi Amman Temple — one of the greatest temples in India. The 14 gopurams and 1000-pillar hall are architectural wonders. Morning puja and Unjal ceremony (if timing aligns). Allow 2–3 hours for the full temple experience.

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch at Madurai (famous for meals and jasmine garlands). Visit Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple (Aaru Padai Veedu, 10 km from Madurai centre). Rest at hotel.

🌙 Evening

Evening procession at Meenakshi temple — Sundareswarar (Shiva) is brought in a palanquin to Meenakshi's chamber. One of the most beautiful daily rituals in any Indian temple. Dinner at Madurai.

🏨 Stay: Madurai 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Madurai is famous for its food — Madurai kari dosa, jigarthanda, and temple prasadam.

🙏 Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Meenakshi Amman is the Goddess in her most regal form — as queen, wife, and divine mother. The evening procession here is among the most moving rituals in South India.

⚠️ Meenakshi temple is very large — wear comfortable footwear. Evening procession timing varies — check with hotel. Camera not allowed inside the temple.

Day 5 📍 Madurai → Rameswaram → return 🚗 Madurai to Rameswaram: 3 hrs. Rameswaram to Chennai: 7.5 hrs by road. Train is recommended for the return.

🌅 Morning

Depart Madurai by 5:30 AM. Drive to Rameswaram (170 km, 3 hours). Arrive by 8:30 AM. Pitru tharpanam (ancestral rites) at Agni Theertham beach — sunrise ritual on the seashore. Darshan at Ramanathaswamy Temple — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and Char Dham sites. The 22 theertham bath (bath in 22 sacred wells inside the temple) — allow 2–3 hours. Special darshan ticket recommended.

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch at Rameswaram. Begin return journey. Drive to Madurai (170 km) — lunch stop at Madurai if needed. Continue to Chennai (450 km total from Rameswaram) or catch a train from Madurai/Rameswaram.

🌙 Evening

Arrive Chennai by late evening if driving. Alternatively: catch the Rameswaram–Chennai Express train for a comfortable overnight return.

🏨 Stay: Return to Chennai 👴 Senior: Modified 🍽️ Pure veg available at Rameswaram. Carry a change of clothes for the theertham bath.

🙏 Rameswaram is one of the holiest places in India. The 22 sacred theerthams inside the temple, the seashore rituals, and the Char Dham significance make this the most spiritually complete stop on the Tamil Nadu circuit.

⚠️ The 22 theertham bath takes 2–3 hours and involves walking significant distances inside the temple. Senior citizens may choose to do only the main sanctum darshan and skip the full theertham circuit. Carry a towel and change of clothes.
