Panchabhootha Shiva Temples

The Panchabhootha Sthalas are five ancient Shiva temples in South India, each representing one of the five classical elements — Earth (Kanchipuram), Water (Tiruchirappalli), Fire (Tiruvannamalai), Air (Srikalahasti), and Space (Chidambaram). Visiting all five is considered one of the most spiritually complete Shiva pilgrimages. The circuit spans Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, connecting some of India's most architecturally magnificent temples.

🌅 Morning

Depart Chennai by 5:30 AM. Drive to Srikalahasti (130 km, approx 2.5 hours). Arrive by 8:00–8:30 AM. Darshan of Srikalahasteeswara — the Vayu (Air) Lingam, the fourth Panchabhootha Stala. For devotees with Rahu-Ketu dosha, special Rahukala puja can be performed here.

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch at Srikalahasti town. Drive to Tirupati (36 km, 1 hour). Check in at hotel. Rest and freshen up.

🌙 Evening

Optional: Evening darshan at Govindarajaswamy Temple in Tirupati town (street level, less crowded than Tirumala). Or peaceful rest at hotel.

🏨 Stay: Tirupati 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg available in Srikalahasti and Tirupati. TTD Annadanam (free meals) at Tirupati.
🙏 Srikalahasti is the Vayu (Air) Lingam — the element that represents the breath of life. The darshan here is deeply calming. Devotees with Kala Sarpa dosha find the Rahu-Ketu puja here particularly powerful.
⚠️ Strict dress code at Srikalahasti — no shorts or sleeveless clothing. Rahu-Ketu puja tickets best booked in advance on TTD website or at temple counter early morning.
Day 2 📍 Tirupati → Kanchipuram (Earth Element) → Tiruvannamalai stay 🚗 Tirupati to Kanchipuram: 2.5 hrs. Kanchipuram to Tiruvannamalai: 2.5 hrs. Total: 5 hrs driving.

🌅 Morning

Depart Tirupati by 5:30 AM. Drive to Kanchipuram (130 km, 2.5 hours). Arrive by 8:00 AM. Darshan of Ekambareswarar — the Prithvi (Earth) Lingam, the first Panchabhootha Stala. Visit the ancient mango tree in the temple complex. Optional: visit Kamakshi Amman temple and Varadaraja Perumal temple (all within 3 km in Kanchipuram).

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch at Kanchipuram. Drive to Tiruvannamalai (100 km, 2.5 hours via Gingee). Check in at hotel.

🌙 Evening

Evening darshan at Arunachaleswarar temple — especially beautiful at dusk. If it is a full moon day, Girivalam (hill circumambulation, 14 km) can be done overnight — only for able-bodied devotees.

🏨 Stay: Tiruvannamalai 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg widely available in both Kanchipuram and Tiruvannamalai.
🙏 Kanchipuram is a city of temples — the Earth element is represented by the Prithvi Lingam at Ekambareswarar. The ancient mango tree in the courtyard is said to have four different types of mangoes — representing the four Vedas.
⚠️ Kanchipuram temple complex is large — significant walking. Comfortable footwear essential. Tiruvannamalai Girivalam is 14 km — only for physically fit devotees.
Day 3 📍 Tiruvannamalai (Fire Element) → Chidambaram (Space Element) 🚗 Tiruvannamalai to Chidambaram: 3 hrs. Total driving: 3 hrs.

🌅 Morning

Early darshan at Arunachaleswarar temple by 6:00 AM — the Fire (Agni) Lingam, second Panchabhootha Stala. Morning puja atmosphere is deeply spiritual. The sacred Arunachala hill glows at sunrise. Allow 2 hours for darshan.

☀️ Afternoon

Light breakfast near temple. Drive to Chidambaram (160 km, 3 hours). Arrive by 1:00–1:30 PM. Rest at hotel. Afternoon darshan of Nataraja — the Akasha (Space) Lingam, third Panchabhootha Stala. The Chidambara Rahasyam (secret of Chidambaram) — the space element is symbolised by emptiness in the sanctum, visible only on special occasions.

🌙 Evening

Evening puja at Nataraja temple is particularly beautiful — the lamp-lit corridors and Nataraja dance posture in amber light is unforgettable. Dinner at Chidambaram.

🏨 Stay: Chidambaram 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg available in both towns. Chidambaram has good restaurants near the temple.
🙏 This day covers two of the most profound Panchabhootha temples — Fire and Space. Arunachala (Fire) represents transformation and spiritual awakening. Chidambaram (Space) represents the formless, infinite consciousness of Shiva. Together they form the deepest philosophical day of the circuit.
⚠️ Chidambaram inner sanctum protocol is strict — follow directions of temple staff. Evening darshan may have a queue. The Chidambara Rahasyam is revealed only during special festivals — do not expect it on regular visits.
Day 4 📍 Chidambaram → Thiruvanaikaval/Trichy (Water Element) → return Chennai 🚗 Chidambaram to Thiruvanaikaval: 1.5 hrs. Trichy to Chennai: 5.5 hrs. Total: 7 hrs driving.

🌅 Morning

Depart Chidambaram by 7:00 AM. Drive to Thiruvanaikaval (90 km, 1.5 hours), near Trichy. Arrive by 8:30–9:00 AM. Darshan of Jambukeswarar — the Appu (Water) Lingam, fifth Panchabhootha Stala. The lingam is partially submerged in a natural spring inside the sanctum — a rare and sacred sight. Darshan of Goddess Akilandeswari in the same complex.

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch in Trichy. Optional: visit Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam (5 km from Jambukeswarar) — one of the largest temple complexes in the world, a Divya Desam of Vishnu. Rest and depart for Chennai.

🌙 Evening

Drive from Trichy to Chennai (330 km, 5.5 hours). Arrive Chennai by evening.

🏨 Stay: Return to Chennai 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg widely available in Trichy. Good options near Srirangam temple.
🙏 Jambukeswarar completes the five elements of the Panchabhootha circuit. The Water Lingam is a reminder that Shiva pervades all of nature — including the living springs beneath the earth. The Goddess Akilandeswari here is worshipped as one of the most powerful forms of Shakti in Tamil Nadu.
⚠️ The Water Lingam is only fully visible during certain months — check with temple for current water level in sanctum. The Srirangam temple is very large — allow 1.5–2 hours if visiting.
