The Navagraha Circuit covers nine temples around Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, each dedicated to one of the nine planetary deities (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu). Performing darshan at all nine temples in sequence is believed to neutralise planetary afflictions, bestow health and prosperity, and complete a cosmic pilgrimage. Most temples are within 30 km of Kumbakonam, making this a convenient 2–3 day circuit.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 📍 Chennai to Kumbakonam via Vaitheeswaran Koil 🚗 Chennai to Vaitheeswaran Koil: 4.5 hrs. Total driving: approx 6 hrs including inter-temple travel.

🌅 Morning

Depart Chennai by 5:30 AM. Drive to Vaitheeswaran Koil (270 km, approx 4.5 hours). Arrive by 10:00–10:30 AM. Darshan of Vaitheeswaran (Mars/Angaraka). Optional: Nadi Jyotishya consultation outside the temple.

☀️ Afternoon

Drive to Thiruvenkadu (15 km, 30 min). Darshan of Swetharanyeswarar — the Mercury (Budha) Navagraha temple. Drive to Keezhaperumpallam (12 km, 20 min). Darshan of Naganathar — the Ketu Navagraha temple.

🌙 Evening

Drive to Kumbakonam (50 km, 1 hour). Check in to hotel. Rest and freshen up. Evening visit to Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam (optional, peaceful evening walk).

🙏 Day 1 covers Mars (Angaraka), Mercury (Budha), and Ketu — three of the nine grahas. Vaitheeswaran Koil is especially powerful for health-related prayers and horoscope concerns.

⚠️ Start very early from Chennai to avoid temple crowds and heat. Keep a change of clothes — Vaitheeswaran Koil tank dip is optional but common.

Day 2 📍 Kumbakonam — Navagraha cluster day 🚗 Total inter-temple driving: approx 4 hrs. All temples within 35 km of Kumbakonam — manageable day.

🌅 Morning

Early start at 5:30 AM. Drive to Thirunageswaram (6 km, 15 min). Rahu Kalam puja and milk abhishekam — the milk is said to turn blue. This is the Rahu Navagraha temple. Return to Kumbakonam for breakfast. Drive to Suryanar Koil (25 km, 40 min). Darshan of Surya (Sun) Navagraha temple.

☀️ Afternoon

Drive to Thingalur (15 km, 25 min). Darshan of Chandra (Moon) Navagraha temple. Drive to Kanjanur (20 km, 30 min). Darshan of Agneeswaran — the Shukra (Venus) Navagraha temple.

🌙 Evening

Drive to Alangudi (30 km, 45 min). Darshan of Apatsahayesvarar — the Guru (Jupiter) Navagraha temple. Return to Kumbakonam (30 km). Dinner and rest.

🏨 Stay: Kumbakonam 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg available at all temple towns. Alangudi has limited options — carry snacks.

🙏 The most intensive day of the circuit — covering Rahu, Sun, Moon, Venus, and Jupiter. Thirunageswaram (Rahu) early morning visit is highly auspicious. Devotees believe the milk turns blue due to Rahu's presence.

⚠️ Thirunageswaram milk abhishekam has specific timings — check locally before arrival. Kanjanur and Alangudi are small villages with limited facilities.

Day 3 📍 Kumbakonam to Thirunallar (Shani Temple) — return 🚗 Kumbakonam to Thirunallar: 1 hr. Return to Chennai: 4.5–5 hrs.

🌅 Morning

Depart by 6:00 AM. Drive to Thirunallar (45 km, 1 hour) near Karaikal. Shani (Saturn) Navagraha temple — the most visited in the circuit. Nala Theertham sacred bath. Oil lamp offering to Shani. This ritual is believed to reduce the effects of Shani dasha and sade sati.

☀️ Afternoon

Lunch at Karaikal (5 km). Rest. Return drive to Kumbakonam (45 km). Checkout from hotel. Begin return journey to Chennai or onward destination.

🌙 Evening

Drive back to Chennai (270 km, 4.5–5 hrs) arriving by evening. Alternatively, board a Kumbakonam–Chennai train if vehicle not needed for return.

🏨 Stay: Kumbakonam or depart to Chennai 👴 Senior: Yes 🍽️ Pure veg available in Karaikal town. Return journey — pack food for the drive.

🙏 Thirunallar Shani temple is the final and most significant stop for many devotees. Shani's blessings here are sought to reduce hardships, delays, and the effects of the 7.5-year sade sati period. The Nala Theertham bath is a central part of the ritual.

⚠️ Saturday queues at Thirunallar can be 2–3 hours. Arrive before 7 AM for shorter wait. Carry sesame oil for Shani offering — also sold at the entrance.
